  • 01st July 2025, Extension Ladders

Gray Practices a “ladders last” policy. Extension ladders are only to be used if all other means of getting to elevated work are not unfeasible.
Ladders shall be inspected before each use by a competent person to check for missing rungs, bolts, cleats, screws, and loose components. Where a ladder has these or other defects, it must be immediately marked as defective or tagged with “Do Not Use” or similar language.
All ladders should be fit for the task at hand and rated for the correct weight with a legible sticker on that is visible.
A Ladder should be used at a 4:1 angle; for every 4 feet in height, the bottom of the ladder is 1 foot out. Extended 42” above the landing, on Gray’s site.
Ladders should be secured at top and bottom to prevent accidental displacement.
Workers should not carry any objects when climbing; use a tagline to raise or lower loads. Make sure any overhead work is barricaded, or a spotter is present.
